Cosmetic Surgery
What is Cosmetic Surgery?
Cosmetic surgery is a broad category of different operations, with the commonality that they are all intended to provide the patient with an enhanced physical appearance. Cosmetic surgery is different from a standard surgery in that it does not serve to correct any medical problems or underlying conditions which may be in play. Rather, it is used only for the purposes of appearance. There are many different types of cosmetic surgery which involve the work of plastic surgeons.
What is Cosmetic Surgery used for?
Some of the most common types of plastic surgery that are done for cosmetic purposes are those that enhance the face. Plastic implants are available to change the shape and size of the chin, the brow and the nose, as well as other parts of the face that are less commonly addressed. In each case, implants are designed with tissue-like plastic to resemble the patient's own skin and are inserted into the skin to provide the best possible shape and contour for each part of the face. Another common plastic surgery is the breast augmentation surgery. In this case, silicone or saline implants are inserted into the breasts in order to augment the size and to provide enhancements to the shape of the breast.
Who is a candidate for Cosmetic Surgery?
The ideal plastic surgery candidate should be a healthy adult individual. It's important that the patient not be a child or an adolescent who is still subject to additional growth and development, as this may cause complications due to the surgery further down the line of growth. The candidate should also not have any medical conditions preexisting which may affect his health when combined with a surgery treatment. The surgeon can determine whether the patient has any of these preexisting concerns and whether they will preclude him from the appropriate cosmetic surgery.
What will the results be like?
Because each type of cosmetic surgery is somewhat different, the results will vary depending upon the specific technique that is used. Generally, however, plastic surgery is done in cosmetic cases to help provide the patient with a younger, firmer looking body. In smaller detailed surgeries, like those on the face, the shape and size of individual facial parts are adjusted to be more in line with the patient's goals. Plastic surgery can also be used for restorative purposes; for instance, it can help to repair damage done by burns or due to abnormalities from birth.
What are the risks?
The risks of cosmetic surgery are many. Adverse reactions to the plastic implants used are relatively common, and patients should also look out for adverse reactions to the anesthesia and other medicines used in the treatment. There is also some risk of scarring or loss of sensation and mobility for various parts of the body.
