Constructive Jaw Surgery

From whiteners to straighteners, beautiful teeth have become an important part of today's beauty-conscious culture. And in the search for the perfect mouth, some have reached the cutting edge, literally. Constructive jaw surgery, or orthognathic surgery, is performed to repair structural defects of the jaw resulting from birth defects, different growth rates of the upper and lower jaw, and injuries. Such surgery can entail the work of an orthodontist (for braces), an oral surgeon, and a maxillofacial surgeon to coordinate all the changes in the teeth, face, and jaw. Constructive jaw surgery can be performed on the upper or lower jaw alone—single jaw osteotomy—or on both—bimaxillary osteotomy. While orthognathic surgery is often necessary to improve chewing and swallowing problems, chronic headaches, pain in the jaw or jaw joint (TMJ), and even sleep apnea, many insurance companies consider it cosmetic surgery which they will not cover.
