Latissimus Dorsi Flap

A Latissimus Dorsi Flap breast reconstruction uses both muscle and skin fro a person's upper back to create a new breast. This procedure is a type of breast reconstruction commonly performed on those who have had a mastectomy to remove one or both breasts. The reconstruction procedure takes its name from the muscle in the upper back, called the latissimus dorsi muscle. In addition to the transplanted back tissue, a small breast implant may be required. A nipple and areola can also be created if necessary to complete the reconstruction. A Latissimus Dorsi Flap breast reconstruction feels like natural breast tissue, and the transplanted skin is usually a good color match. This surgery is more complicated and intensive than a traditional breast augmentation surgery, and therefore healing will take more time.
